In this article, Marina Aburas, Veronica Soeberto, Terrence
Williamson, Runqi Liang, Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem and Yupeng Wu (2019) focus
on the applications of thermochromic (temperature to colour change) window
technology in building applications in the energy saving technology area,
through computer simulations, experiments held outdoors and a collection of external
research ranging from 2009 to 2019. An
experiment using eight thermochromic window types was conducted using a
physical test room with simulations to illustrate the effects of a
thermochromic coating application. The simulation demonstrated how sun
radiation influences temperature in the glass and reduces heat entering into
the room while maintaining transparency of the material. Through additional
research, it was found that having thermochromic window could save up to 73%
energy consumed in buildings. The article further highlighted many factors open
for consideration. One of which is the ability to be customised according to
building conditions such as air-conditioning settings, occupancy percentage,
position of thermochromic glazing and the layering types of windows.
This article provides useful information for our research
project on the use of smart windows in commercial buildings. Using advanced
technology, such as incorporating thermochromic material into our window product
could result in greater reduction of the energy consumed to cool the building.
This could allow the building to be more versatile to achieve optimum thermal
and visual comfort for occupants, hence enhancing sustainability of the
building. Although the experiments were not performed in Singapore, the article
still provides relevant information and considerations regarding window
technology which plays a significant part in our research project.
